Stated Meeting Presbytery of the James (Please copy & distribute to all Church Officers & Leaders) October 13, 2004 Dear Friends:
Here is a recap of the work of the Presbytery of the James Stated Meeting #58 held at Salisbury Church, Midlothian, VA. The meeting was longer than usual, but had a number of important features and actions taken. Attendance: 68 congregations out of 113 represented (60%); 128 Elder Commissioners (59%); 114 Minister Commissioners (53%); 9 Certified Educators/Elders; and 30 visitors. PEOPLE We welcomed the following ministers into the presbytery or recognized changes in ministries: Rev. Amos Hood, Pastor, Three Chopt Church, Richmond, VA, from Mississippi Presbytery Rev. David Horne, Interim Pastor, Chester Church, Chester, VA, from East Tennessee Presbytery Rev. David Shaffer, Pastor, Bott and Concord Churches, from West Virginia Presbytery Rev. Laura Sugg, Associate Pastor, Westminster Church, Charlottesville, from Greater Atlanta Presbytery We enrolled four persons as candidates for Minister of Word and Sacrament: Aram Bae, Lord Jesus Church, Richmond, VA Randall Clow, Milford Church, Milford, VA Dan Lewis, Richmond Second, Richmond, VA Patrick Ryan, Three Chopt, Richmond, VA ACTIONS: The presbytery… 1. Heard the final report of COLA (Committee on Local Arrangements) Committee about the recent General Assembly and how well the presbytery did in hosting the event. Appreciation was extended to all who participated. 2. Approved the May 15, 2004, minutes of the Presbytery. 3. Approved, as submitted, the Session Records Committee report. 4. Elected Rev. Carroll Londoner as 2005 Moderator of the presbytery 5. Approved the proposed 2005 presbytery budget. 6. Elected members to various boards and committees. 7. Approved use of $100,000 from temporary restricted funds for church development projects within the presbytery in 2005. 8. Approved Allen Fisher, Beverly Bullock, and Jack Corley as ordination exam readers and Mike Motsko and Billy Craig as alternate exam readers. 9. Approved an alternate means of testing policy for candidates for ordination who cannot pass the regular ordination exams.

Approved E. D. Clem (New Hanover) and Joseph Young (First
United) to be 11. Authorized Durk Steed to administer the Lord’s Supper in connection with his call as Chaplain at St. Christopher’s School. 12. Changed ministerial status of Rev. Bruce Lancaster (as of August 1) and Rev. William Charles (as of August 3) to Member at Large. 13. Approved for transfer from a non-Reformed denomination Rev. David Knupp, pastor-elect at Swift Creek Church. 14. Approved the transfer of Bott Memorial Church from District 4 to District 5. 15. Approved for first reading the Presbytery Manual revisions (first major revision since 1997). 16. Approved action to encourage congregations to receive a special disaster relief offering in November for POJ Congregations and others damaged by recent hurricanes and flooding. 17. Dissolved the Restoration New Church Development. 18. Recognized and honored Rev. William (Buzz) and Janet Kell for their ministry at Restoration NCD and their continued work with the Elijah House Academy for inner city children (K-8 grades) 19. Learned of the Presbytery-wide project to fund 100 scholarships ($450 each) for Forman Christian College in Pakistan which has been returned to the PCUSA by the Pakistani an Government. 20. Approved for 2005 Camp Hanover to celebrate the Lord’s Supper for camp sponsored events and programs. Presbytery Minute for Mission Celebrations: 1. Chairs for Daughters of Zelophehad…project by First Church, Richmond, and Grace Baptist Church in which artists and others painted old wooden Sunday School chairs and sold them in support of the Daughter’s ministry (assisting women without housing) 2. Heard of the progress of the Self-Development of People’s work with the Cleaning Business. 3. Learned of the Small Church Student in Ministry (year long) program where three seminary students are serving full time in three small congregations: Rivermont, Rennie Memorial, and Beulah. 4. Heard from Rev. Todd McCoy about his fast growing, Louisa Presbyterian. Congregation has had 7 new members in six months, growing from 28 members to 35…a 25% increase! TWO CENTS A MEAL OFFERING: $134.01 NEXT MEETING: The 59th Stated Meeting of the Presbytery will be Saturday, February 12, 2005, hosted by Amelia County Congregations.
