State Baptist Group Joins Anti-Payday Loan Drive By Jeremy M Lazarus, Richmond Free Press, September 1, 2007 Payday lenders have a new foe: churches. The Baptist General Convention of Virginia (BGCVA), one of the state’s largest Baptist groups, is among the faith groups making plans to challenge payday loans. The Richmond-based association of 1,100 predominately black churches is now seeking to carve out a role as a leader in an interdenominational faith-based alliance that is organizing an anti-payday campaign. The campaign aims to get the General Assembly to roll back the nearly 400 percent annual interest rate that payday lenders currently are allowed to charge borrowers for the short-term loans. |
