Dear Friends:

 

Here is a recap of the work of the Presbytery of the James Stated Meeting #56 held at Westminster Church, Charlottesville, VA.   The meeting was very productive, good spirit, and the weather was incredible for the winter!  Thank you for your leadership in this important time in the life of the presbytery.

Attendance:  74 congregations out of 112 represented (66%); 151 Elder Commissioners (67%); 112 Minister Commissioners (49%); 4 Certified Educators; 19 visitors.

 

PEOPLE        We welcomed the following ministers into the presbytery or recognized changes

in ministries:

            Rev. Russell Spry Williams, H. R., from Shepherds and Lapsley Presbytery.

            Rev. David Wood, Pastor, Hebron Church, from Mississippi Presbytery

            Rev. Joseph Park, Pastor, Fredericksburg Korean Church, from Hamni Presbytery.

            Rev. David McFarlane, H. R., from Pittsburg Presbytery

           

CHANGES WITHIN PRESBYTERY:

Rev. Tim Read to become Associate Pastor, First Church, Charlottesville

Rev. Lauren Cogswell became Member at Large

Validated the ministries of Rev. Dan Roberts (University of Richmond) and Rev. Virginia Martin (Nature’s New Hope).

Honorable Retirement of Rev. Tim Limburg February 1, 2004.

 

Approved the examination for ordination of Todd McCoy (Salem Presbytery) and his call to the Louisa Church as pastor.

 

ACTIONS:     The presbytery…

1.                   Installed Elder Rebecca Ford (Campbell Memorial) as moderator for 2004.

2.                   Approved the minutes of the October 14, 2003, Stated Meeting.

3.                   Approved balancing of Elder and Minister Commissioners for 2004-2005 presbytery meetings.

4.                   Enrolled Melissa Harmon (Gayton Kirk) and Kevin Day (Westminster, Charlottesville) as candidates for the ministry.

5.                   Elected a number of persons to various boards and committees of the presbytery.

6.                   Elected Elder Ralph F. Miller, D-2; Elder Mary E. Stewart, D-3; and Rev. Ken Davis as alternate commissioners to Synod Assembly, July, 2004.

7.                   Elected Rev. Starke Cauthorn, Rev. Bill McElveen, Elder Jim Fields, D-7; and Elder Evelyn Thomas, D-9, as Commissioners to the Synod Assembly, July 2004.

8.                   Elected members to the Committee on Representation:  Elder Dwight Clark, D-5; Elder Kathleen Vincent, D-6; and Rev. Fakhri Yacoub, D-6.

9.                   Elected members to the Permanent Judicial Commission:  Rev. Wayne Bernardo; Rev. James Baker; and Elder Van Bowen (Crestwood Church); and Elder Nancy Squire (First, Emporia).

10.               Approved changes to the powers granted to the Trustees to act as a Commission between meetings of the presbytery.

11.               Re-designated excess 2002 funds for new front doors at the presbytery office and to purchase a video projector for the presbytery.

12.               Approved the sale of a condominium for First Church, Charlottesville.

13.               Approved changes in terms of call (3% raises) for staff: Rev. H. Carson Rhyne, Jr., and Rev. Nancy B. Dawson (effective January 1, 2004); and Rev. Tim Hoyt Duncan (effective July 1, 2004).

14.               Approved as a final reading the District Evaluation Task Force report changing the district structure in a significant manner.

15.               Approved all amendments to the Book of Order from the General Assembly except 03-G

16.               Approved declaring 2004 a year for our congregations to focus on preventing and reducing violence within our bounds and in the world.

17.               Approved Vision 2020 report as a second reading indicating new congregations to be started and locations by the year 2020.

 

 

Learned of the tremendous work of COLA (Committee on Local Arrangements) for the 216th General Assembly and the need for volunteers from all congregations.

Honored Certified Educator Estelle Roundtree McCarthy for her service as a Volunteer in Mission for the presbytery.

Celebrated the Blue Ridge New Church Development and its building program and plans for chartering.

Heard about the work of Self Development of People and the recent grants received in our presbytery.

Learned of a number of upcoming events for leadership development:  Moderator’s Conference for elders, deacons, ministers, church members, February 29, 2004, Laurel Church; Equipping the Saints training event in March; Spring Fling for high school youth at Camp Hanover; Middle School Event at Camp Hanover; Presbyterian Triennium at Purdue University, summer, 2004.

NEXT MEETING:

The 57th Stated Meeting of the Presbytery will be Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Southminster Church, Richmond, hosted by Southminster and Lord Jesus Korean Churches.
