Kenya — DR000131

<https://www.pcusa.org/give/online/project?DR000131>

It has been about three month since the upheaval following Kenya’s December 27 disputed presidential elections that left more than 1,000 Kenyans dead and nearly half a million displaced.

PDA continues to work with the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in providing basic humanitarian assistance to the approximately 25,000 internally displaced people (IDP) in Molo. Recently, PCEA helped in the distribution of over 500 tents to displaced families.  The tents has been especially helpful to IDP families where women who were in the last stages of pregnancy when then fled have recently given birth.

PDA has provided $100,000 to the help IDPs in Kenya but additional funds are needed to help families prepare to return to their homes.

Kenya Post-Election Violence

 Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is supporting our partner, the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), as they respond to the violence — attributed to political parties disputing the Presidential results — that has resulted in looting, destruction of property, injuries, the loss of lives, and the displacement of thousands of people.

 Much of the violence has been in Eldoret, an area where PDA has supported the PCEA in the response to ethnic violence this past summer.

 The Presbyterian Church of East Africa’s Board for Social Responsibility (BSR) has requested $50,000 in rapid response funds to provide food supplies, blankets and mosquito nets to about 8,000 internally displaced persons.  PCEA will work with other members of the ACT Alliance as well as with our mission hospitals and ministry of health to provide medical services and with the Ministry for internal security to provide adequate security while in the camps.

 Cliff Kirkpatrick, Stated Clerk of PC(USA) has written a letter to the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa <http://www.pcusa.org/oga/newsstories/clerk-kenya-jan08.htm>.  A joint letter from Cliff Kirkpatrick as General Secretary, and Rev. Dr Setri Nyomi as General Secretary of World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) has also been sent to PCEA.

Please continue to hold all of the people of Kenya in your prayers as they struggle for peace and stability during this difficult period.
